The Long Way - Bernard Moitessier

This is a wonderful book by a sailing legend Bernard Moitessier. It can be enjoyed by mariners and non-mariners alike. Written in a lilting poetic prose, it's an amazing work in its own right, put forward with much of the pragmatism that is also required by a lone sailor attempting to singlehandedly circumnavigate the globe in a sailboat, but one who loves the sea deeply. A tale of high risk, and of a man against the elements.

This is a Google book preview, much of the novel is there (but not all). I will certainly be adding it to my library soon.

Has anyone ever read this book before? If so, what are your thoughts?

I read it quite a few years ago so it's not really fresh in my mind. I went through a phase where I found myself reading and enjoying quite a few sea adventure/survival type of books. I do remember enjoying the book. I remember being amazed at the conditions he was sailing in all alone. The book inspires the quest for ultimate freedom ... to get away from it all and just be free. He has an occasional rant about particular governments, environmental issues, the need for man & machine to constantly build and destroy, etc. The may be more helpful as some seem to think he goes a little "nuts".

One book I really enjoyed, and consider one of my favorite books of all time, is .

Man alone with Nature and God. No government, women, corporations, or society, etc. trying to control & manipulate him.
